Even very short time surges, several times the nominal value, can completely disable electrical or electronic devices and cause a fire. Perhaps many points in mining lie on the surface. Namely: what equipment is most effective for private mining, and what equipment is optimal for farms? How to calculate the benefits, and on what equipment to mine the most popular cryptocurrencies – bitcoin and ether?

Such overvoltages in electrical networks are possible during thunderstorms, accidents or transients, for example, when lightning strikes a power line, when switching powerful inductive loads or short circuits. In such cases, the surge protection device (surge protection device) limits the surge voltage and diverts the current surge to earth.

Consequences of overvoltages

Lightning is quite common. Statistically, the share of damage to computer equipment from lightning strikes is by no means small.
The consequences of a disturbance are not always visible and immediate. The weakening of a component due to overvoltage can lead to a shortened life of the equipment or a “delayed” failure. Thus, the user cannot make the connection between the fault and the real cause of the fault.

He will rush to make a bad diagnosis, hence the ineffective remediation of the problem.

Overvoltages have different effects on electronic equipment; in descending order of importance:

  • Destruction;
  • Voltage breakdown of semiconductor junctions;
  • Destruction of component connections;
  • Destruction of printed circuit board tracks or contacts;
  • Destruction of triacs / thyristors at dV / dt;
  • Interference with operation;
  • Random operation of latches, thyristors and triacs;
  • Memory erasure;
  • Program errors or malfunctions;
  • Data and transmission errors;
  • Premature aging;
  • Block destruction.

Components subject to overvoltages have a shorter service life.

VG technology

CITEL’s VG technology ensures that CITEL surge protectors have a service life far exceeding that of conventional varistor surge arresters and that they meet several test classes.
In order to improve the performance of surge protectors, CITEL has developed and patented a technology that combines the advantages of a high-energy varistor (MOV) and a special gas-filled spark arrester (GSG). This specific circuit, designated as “VG” in the “1+2+3” (DS250VG, DUT250VG, DAC1-13VG) or “2+3” (DAC50VG) type surge arresters provides the best performance:

  • Protection level;
  • Service life (due to leakage current suppression);
  • Continuity of operation and quality of power supply (no accompanying current);
  • Stable end-of-life performance.

These characteristics make it possible to achieve, even with one stage of surge protection, the same protection efficiency as with two-stage protection (Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 surge arresters). In order to eliminate chaperone and leakage currents and to reduce residual voltage and the energy released by the device, CITEL has developed the VG technology, in which the varistor and the arrester are connected in series and the characteristics of these devices are specially selected. With this design, the varistor eliminates the chaperone current, the arrester eliminates the leakage current, and their combined operation reduces the residual voltage and energy released on the surge arrester. Thus, VG technology combines the advantages of both physical principles, reducing or eliminating the disadvantages. Thanks to VG technology, CITEL surge arresters have a service life far exceeding that of conventional varistorized surge arresters, and their performance ensures compliance with several test classes. For example, the DS250VG-300 series surge arresters meet all three test classes required by state standards. In practice, this means that by installing such an ultrasonic protection device in the input panel, where the first class is required, we reliably protect the equipment standing inside the building at a distance of at least 20 meters along the cable without installing additional devices of the 2nd and 3rd classes.
